Amrit’s been talking about his prized possession for a while and today I got a ride in it. The Willy’s Jeep which he acquired from a friend is a 1962 model. He’s in the process of restoring it. With some mechanical and engine work just done, we decided to go for a spin.
We drove off from Park Street with the wind screen in an upright position, but since Amrit was having trouble with his vision being blocked due to the top of the screen, we dropped it forward onto the bonnet just short of Theatre Road. With the screen up and being seated in the magnificent Classic Automobile, we were getting stared at by one and all on the streets and once we dropped the wind screen, well people just stopped in their tracks to watch us go by. In fact at one point one young fellow crossed us staring at the Jeep as we stopped at a red light. As he walked past in front of us, he turned back and gave us a Thumbs Up.
As we drove past the Victoria Memorial and towards Red Road through the Maidan, the wind in our hair and the sheer joy of being seated so high up was an awesome feeling.
I did forget to mention that Amrit’s driver was sitting behind us and the description that befits him is “one of Gabbar’s men from Sholay…moustache and all”. So I guess people must have thought of us as the latest goons to hit the streets of Kolkata.
Full circle, lots of eyeballs and a refreshing drive later; we parked the vehicle with a feeling of accomplishment.

This Willy’s Jeep will soon be the talk of town.
