It’s not every day that you get an opportunity to learn from a master landscape photographer like Soumitra Datta. So, when the opportunity came my way, I made sure I was at Rabindra Sarobar well before dawn, ready to soak in some knowledge.
The workshop was spread across two sessions — the first beginning before sunrise and continuing till late morning, and the second beginning in the late afternoon and stretching a little beyond sunset. And there was a very good reason for those timings: the magical light around sunrise and sunset is what makes landscape photography so special.
Rabindra Sarobar turned out to be the perfect classroom, with its lush greenery, pathways and the vast expanse of the lake providing plenty of opportunities to explore composition, light and perspective.
It was an early start, a long day and plenty of photography, but most importantly, it was a great learning experience. There’s something special about seeing a familiar place through the eyes of someone who has mastered the art of capturing it.
I came away with some new insights, a better understanding of landscape photography, and, of course, plenty of photographs to remember the day by.
