Anna fever on Park Street

Till a few days ago i had never heard of Anna Hazare and I’m sure 99% of the citizens of this country had not heard of him. All of a sudden, 5 days into his hunger strike comparisons are being drawn with Gandhi. One man’s stand against the plague of corruption in India has captured the imagination of the common people and engulfed the nation into a voice in unison against this scourge.

So the email petitions have been doing the rounds and I myself had received several and the media is abuzz with Anna Hazare, but I witnessed the decibel, power and length of this voice as citizens of Kolkata marched down Park Street in support of Anna Hazare chanting slogans of Patriotism and against Corruption. The entire length of Park Street seemed to be covered by this serpentine slogan shouting, banner and candle wielding mass of citizens of all ages.

It just goes to show how one man’s belief can stir up an entire nation to action.

Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, are you listening?
