A friend of mine had invited me to his office in Dalhousie, and after we had caught up and exchanged the usual stories, conversations and gossip, he suddenly told me he had a little surprise for me.
Knowing my interest in photography, he decided to show me something that I certainly wasn't expecting.
He took me up to the roof.
And what a surprise it turned out to be!
Standing there, above the old buildings of Dalhousie, with Kolkata stretching out in every direction, I was absolutely overjoyed. There is something quite magical about seeing a city from a completely different perspective. The familiar buildings, streets and landmarks suddenly look very different when you are looking down at them rather than walking past them.
For someone who enjoys photography, a rooftop like this is almost like being handed a new toy!
I thanked my friend for the wonderful experience and, of course, wasted no time in getting the camera out.
The Kolkata skyline from up there offered a wonderful mix of the old and the new — the heritage architecture of Dalhousie standing alongside the ever-changing cityscape.
So, here are a few glimpses of Kolkata as seen from a rather special rooftop in Dalhousie.
Sometimes, you don't need to go very far to discover a completely new view of the city you thought you knew so well.
